Diaries, 1779-1800.

The collection consists of 5 diaries: 1. diary kept while on Gen. John Sullivan's expedition against the Indians in western New York State, April-October, 1779, as a lieutenant in the 4th Penn. Regiment; 2. diary kept while an army paymaster in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, and New York, especially in Pittsburgh and Fort McIntosh, October, 1784-August, 1785, describing the land, vegetation, and the negotiations with the Indians at Fort McIntosh; 3. diary describing in detail several trips on the Ohio River from Pittsburgh and the Falls of the Ohio, and overland, including details of the country, inhabitants, local customs, Indian depredations, meetings with Daniel Boone and others while in company with Maj. William North, his journey to New York and Philadelphia describing the difficulties he had obtaining specie for the Western Army, May, 1786-May, 1787; 4. diary kept while in New York City, Philadelphia and places en route, collecting money for his regiment from private individuals as well as the government, July 3-Oct. 25, 1787; and 5. diary kept on an expedition against the Tuscarora village at Ouaquaga (Windsor, New York) in October, 1778, and on an expedition against the Indians at Onondaga, New York, in April, 1779, including a diary or daily farm record kept at his Castle Howard farm, near Princeton, New Jersey, April, 1797-March, 1800.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
